Comparison of Melting Rates Predicted by the Program with Experimentally Determined Values
Based on the following model, which roughly describes the solid bed and melt pool in the plaque illustrated on the Extrusion page, we can plot the ratio of the Solid Bed Width and the Channel Width, X/W, as a function of the position along the screw.
It can be seen from the results below, apart from the occasional discontinuities caused by the solid bed breaking as a result of the acceleration occurring in the channel in the compression zone, that the predicted screw properties, in terms of melting rate along the screw, fit very well with the experimentally determined values for Linear Low Density Polyethylene and and Polystyrene for three different screw designs.
